My Socom 4 Review! Well if you’re like me you couldn’t sleep waiting for the beta to be released! I’ve been playing Socom since the first edition years ago. Socom 1, Socom 2, Socom 3, Socom Combined Assault, Socom Confrontation, and now Socom 4… Not to mention I played all of the Socom Fire Team Bravos for PSP. Did I mention I like Socom? ha ha.
Ok, well here it is, my Socom 4 Review: The first 20 minutes of playing, truthfully I didn’t like it too much… I felt let down and just wished they would charge us $50 to add 40 new maps to Socom Confrontation! BUT, another ten minutes in, and I’m feeling the addiction kicking in. The game play is insane. It blows all of the other socoms away easily. To me, it’s like a combination of three games… Battlefield, MAG, and Socom Confrontation. Three great games wrapped in a nice package and stamped Socom 4 for approval.

Socom 4 – Game of the Year?

Now that I’ve been playing every day since the beta began, I can tell you that Socom will be the game of the year! I’m taking bets! anyone? It just has to be…

Socom 4 Review – Game Modes

Ok lets continue with the Socom 4 Review. I love the Game modes! My favorite has to be Bomb Squad, but Uplink is a close second. Bomb Squad is what really makes this game (in my opinion). I mean one person becomes a bomb technician a/k/a a fat slow turtle, ha ha but he’s hard to take out.. the rest of the team has to protect him as he seeks out and attempts to disarm 3 bombs. He can take alot of shots because he’s heavily geared up (which explains why he’s so slow). I did notice that he dies pretty quickly if the enemy knifes him in the back a few times… As far as Suppression, I have always loved that game mode in earlier Socoms, but these alternate modes in Socom 4 are so much fun that I don’t think I can even play regular suppression anymore. I mean the team play and objectives adds so much to the game.
Here are the modes that I’ve seen so far:

  • Suppression – eliminate the enemy team of course
  • Bomb Squad – defend your Bomb squad technician while he disarms the explosives
  • Uplink – You have to steal the enemies data and try to deliver it back to your base
  • Scrum – has no respawn, limited weapons (no snipers, grenades, etc), higher damage, and you can move faster
  • Last Defense – you try to capture control points, after you have captured all three, you have to find the enemy base and destroy it

I think there were a few more, but I can’t recall. One important thing to note is that in Socom 4 there is health regeneration… so basically, if you are having a gun fight, your opponent may just run away from you until he regains his health and then come back for you. Thankfully, there are ‘classic socom modes’ that bring the old socom back.. for example in these modes you can move faster, there is no respawn, no health regeneration, and the game has rounds (like in previous Socoms).

So in summary, my Socom 4 Review goes as follows: If you don’t have the game yet, you’re already missing out on the best game for the PS3!!!
